A few months ago I blogged about the Real Housewives of Atlanta, and asked your opinion regarding the way the show portrays Black Women. Your responses ran the gamut. From “it’s just entertainment” to “I’m utterly embarrassed by the show” needless to say, everyone had a strong opinion. In the end, it seemed to me that while many don’t see how the show differs from many other television shows of that ilk, the vast majority of those weighing in see the show as humiliating to Black women. Still, the bottom line is that we all have the right to simply not watch the show if we don’t like it. Freedom of choice, right? Fair enough.
But the latest show featuring girl-on-girl bad behavior, Basketball Wives, has me thinking a bit more. When I heard that celebrities like Star Jones and Wendy Williams were spearheading a boycott of the show, it made me think about my earlier Atlanta Housewives blog. I realized that there are apparently a lot fewer people who are embarrassed by these shows than I thought originally. I decided to look into the show a bit further so that I could form an opinion, and of course, seek yours as well. (I admit that my viewings have been limited to You Tube clips). As I researched the show, I learned that the most recent season garnered almost 4 million viewers. Amazing.
otwithstanding Basketball Wives’ record-breaking season, most claim to be outright disgusted by the show. But numbers don’t lie. Someone is watching. In fact, a lot of people are watching. And that begs the question, are we most fascinated by things that should disgust us or is there some other explanation for why we keep watching these shows?
